Hawk Hollow Farm is a small farm located in Greene, Rhode Island.  Jane and Bruce Phillips bought the farm back in 1989, when they had some riding horses.  In 1990, they saw an ad for a Miniature horse for sale and went just to look — and the next thing you know, the big guys were gone and the barn was full of Minis.

In 1994 the Phillips’s decided to get involved in showing Minis and been participating in NEMHS shows ever since.  They started showing in the performance classes, but now they focus mostly on halter. It was also the year they started breeding.  “We’ve seen many changes in our breeding program over the years, and now we finally have the crosses of the bloodlines that we want,” says Jane.  “Our brood mares are out of the Blue Carousel and Laredo Half Penny bloodlines. These crosses with our stallion are producing the type of foals, with the look, conformation and movement that we want.”

The Phillips’s only breed for a few foals a year, so that they can put a lot of time into them. Jane and Bruce do a lot of imprinting and handling of the foals, to prepare them for showing as foals. Hawk Hollow foals can be seen in the NEMHS Weanling Futurity every year, always placing high and taking the Champion sash a number of times.

Hawk Hollows Showing How Its Done

Hawk Hollow’s stallion is SPF Steel the Show. “Mac” is a gorgeous 29.5″ gray stallion with one blue eye. His sire is Ft Phantom Farms Steely Dan – a Multiple National AMHA Top-Ten Halter Champion, Multiple Supreme Halter Champion, and AMHA Halter Event Horse — and his dam’s sire is full brother to Lucky Fours Black Velvet.

Jane and Bruce bought Mac as a yearling and did some showing with him, and he did very well. They sold him, but in 2006 had the opportunity to get him back.  Jane says, “I jumped on it. I have always liked his foals, and he has not disappointed me yet.”  In 2007, they brought him out of retirement (he was 9yrs old at the time) and took him to the AMHA Eastern Regionals, where he won Reserve Champion Amateur Senior Stallion (Level 1, with Jean St Denis). Mac is once again retired and enjoying the good life, making beautiful foals for Hawk Hollow.

Mac has sired Hawk Hollows Show Me the Blue (2006 Eastern Regional Grand Champion Amateur Junior Mare (Level 1) and Solid Color Mare), Hawk Hollows Show Me the Money (Multi-Grand Champion), Hawk Hollows Show Me Whatcha Got and Hawk Hollows Showing How Its Done (both NEMHS Weanling Futurity Champions), and now Hawk Hollows Sheeza Show Steeler, who just won the Liberty Class at the 2009 NEMHS Louis Voegeli Memorial Show — out of 22 horses entered. Jane and Bruce are awaiting his last foal of the year, due any day now.

Jane and Bruce Phillips enjoy introducing people to the joy of owning Miniature horses and to the world of showing Miniatures, giving their help and full support if needed. They love to have people come and visit the farm. So if you are looking to buy a Mini for show or just a pet, or just want to find out more about Minis, Just give us them a call, drop them an email or visit their website.  They will be happy to set up time for a visit.  They also raise Cairn Terriers and have puppies available for sale, and two males available for stud.
