Sawmill River Farm, located in historic West Brookfield Massachusetts, has been involved with miniature horses since 1979, when an ad in the Wall Street Journal for Miniature Horses caught owner Roger Slobody’s eye.

Intrigued by the thought of a “mini” horse, Roger contacted Hemlock Brook Farm and purchased 3 miniatures over the phone. The rest was history.
Roger has since put together a herd of some of the finest Rowdy, Boones Little Buckeroo and Rhotens Little Dandy mares that he could find, in addition to his home-bred herd sire, SRF Nobility, AMHA Reserve World Champion and AMHR National Champion.
The most notable horse at Sawmill River Farm is NFC Dandys Shady Lady, a Rhotens Little Dandy daughter. Shady, in addition to NFC Flashdance, put SRF on the map in 1992 by winning the AMHA National Grand Champion Jr. and Sr. mare titles, Sawmill’s First World Grand Champions! She went on to win the National Grand Champion Sr. Mare title in 1995, one of the few mares in AMHA history to win both the Jr. AND Sr. Mare Grands in their show careers.
NFC Dandys Shady Lady
The whole family — Roger, Laurie, Kristina, and Wesley — are involved with the daily operation of the farm. Roger’s passion is breeding, Laurie’s passion is foaling, Kristina’s is showing, and Wesley…. well, Wesley won’t admit it, but he enjoys a little bit of everything. Showing is now one of SRF’s main priorities. Our herd consists of many National and World Champions, as well as a few treasured World and National Grand Champions. After having trainer after trainer on the farm, Roger decided if we couldn’t train and show our own horses, we shouldn’t do it all. It is now a family affair. We pride ourselves with showing our own homebreds and have had great success doing it.
